Head Lettuce

  • Best if grown in well-drained soils rich in organic matter
  • Ideal soil pH: 6.0-7.0
  • Grows best between 45-80 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Space plants 6-18 inches apart

  • Aphids
  • Slugs
  • Land snails
  • Armyworms
  • Flea beetles
  • Weevils
  • Thrips
  • Nematodes

Diseases:

  • Anthracnose
  • Big vein
  • Bottom rot
  • Downy mildew
  • Leaf drop
  • Powdery mildew
  • Septoria leaf spot

Harvest:

  • Pick before bolting.
  • Harvest in the morning, before strong sun exposure.

Post-Harvest:

  • Wash head lettuce
  • Hydrocool or ice-pack before storing
  • Store between 98-100% relative humidity, as close to 32 degrees as possible
  • Do not store in the same building as produce that release a lot of ethylene
    • Lettuce is highly sensitive
  • Can be stored for 2-3 weeks
